Geometry Stringart Class Day1 - What is 'Stringart'?

1. What is Stringart?

‘String art’ is the art of expressing the shape of things through thread.

[Different Hexagon String Art Patterns]

A straight line is the line connect two [POINTS].

If we draw straight [LINES] according to a certain rule, a [CURVE] is generated by gathering the contacts of the straight lines.

(And those straight lines are the numerous differential functions of the curves made.)

So, we can make geometrical patterns using the principle of string art.

Also, lots of strings can generate [SURFACE].

 [Point, Line and Surface]

Let’s talk about ‘Curves’ more.

A painter can draw a ‘curve’ as he wants. However, we cannot make a ‘curve’ connecting 2 points (nails).

Because ‘Segment connecting one nail(point) and another nail(point) is always STRAIGHT LINE.

And If we draw [straight lines] according to a certain rule,

The point of contact* of countless drawn straight lines draws a [curve].

[Curves made from contact points of straight lines]

(Actually, many straight lines are numerous differential functions of the curve function created by the contact point*. The relationship between string art and differential function will be discussed later in further study.)

Then we can specify the definition of ‘string art’ as follows.

String art is “an art area that expresses the shape of things with a [straight line] called a thread.” To express a curve with string art, we need to make countless straight lines and express the curve through the contact points of countless straight lines.

[A circle can be represented by a straight line.]

However, recently, not only string art that creates a geometric shape with a combination of points and lines, but also string art that colors [face] by making countless irregular line segments is being used in various ways.

As can be seen from the lollipop and ice cream in following picture, string art in the form of filling in irregular lines by connecting nails with various threads after simplifying the object to be expressed is also included in the category of comprehensive string art.

Since the goal of Project Ssongg is to mathematically explain the rules for expressing geometric patterns with string art and simulate them with a simulator, in this project, 'string art' is defined as follows, classified into two, and rules for weaving threads We will only discuss 'geometric string art' that can explain and predict patterns.

Let’s start! :D
